Are you feeling demotivated at work? Here’s how you can deal with workplace demotivation 

 

We all have, at some point in time, felt a sense of demotivation at work. Sometimes because of work monotony, lack of appreciation, or sometimes out of the recurring nature of being at work. Work demotivation can appear in many forms.  

 

According to a report on UK Employee Motivation Statistics, 34% of the UK workforce is unhappy in their current job. Considering such high statistics on workplace demotivation, it’s crucial that we understand what factors might account for demotivation and how best to deal with them. If you’ve found yourself on this article you are likely feeling stuck and unmotivated in your current job.  

 

Read these five top tips on how to continue to be motivated while being more positive and reach your work goals. 

Remember Why You Chose This Role

Think back to the time when you applied for the job. Remember the mixture of nerves and excitement before your interview, or remember researching the company you wished to be a part of? Think about why you originally applied for the role and what excited you about the position. 

Although your job may be stressful and you might be lacking motivation now, remember all the positive and fun parts you enjoy and focus on these. Have a think about these questions: 

  • What motivates you to get up and go to work in the morning? 
  • What do you love about your job? 
  • Do you have great colleagues? 
  • Do you have a good work-life balance? 
  • Do you work in an ideal location? 
  • What is it about your job that you really enjoy? 

Try and focus more on the positives rather than the negatives. Understand and appreciate all the positive aspects you get and have gained from your work. If you do not have an answer for the questions above, why not work towards having an answer for each of them.

Ask for More

If you want to get the most out of your job, why not start by asking for more? Switch things up and ask your manager if you can jump on a new task or ask for extra responsibilities! 

A great way to feel inspired at work is to look for new opportunities and projects within the company. If your manager does not have extra responsibilities to offer you now, they will appreciate your initiative and when there is a project available, they will think of you!  

Another way to keep you occupied is by taking advantage of training opportunities within the company – apprenticeships are a great example of learning on the job and they can expose you to different projects and parts of the business you haven’t worked with before.

Get Involved

If you are lacking motivation and feeling uninspired, one of the best ways to overcome this is to spend more time around the people you work with. Why not make an effort with your colleagues – how about going for lunch, a coffee, or offering to help a colleague with work. Alternatively get more involved by throwing yourself into workplace initiatives such as a charity event. 

Spending time with people and helping others has been proven to have a direct impact on your happiness and well-being. Try organising a bake off, holding a quiz, or organising a team social event. Before you decide to retreat to your desk from lunch, you could get involved and engage with your colleagues.

Set Yourself Goals

Work on your personal development by setting yourself challenging but achievable goals to stay motivated. Do you know exactly what is expected of you? What do you want to achieve in your career? What experience and skills do you want to gain from your job? 

Write yourself a list of clearly defined and achievable career goals to keep you on track and motivated to reach your targets. This will give you a sense of purpose and act as a daily reminder of what you want to achieve. 

Workplace demotivation can be a significant hurdle, but it doesn’t have to define your experience. By implementing these strategies, you can take proactive steps to address demotivation and reignite your enthusiasm for your work. Remember, it’s perfectly normal to experience ups and downs in motivation, and with the right approach, you can overcome these challenges and find renewed satisfaction in your professional life. 

Celebrate your successes

Celebrating small successes is a great way to stay motivated in your job. Acknowledge yourself for the hard work you put in and the accomplishments you make. 

Give yourself a pat on the back. Acknowledge your hard work and accomplishments by taking a few moments to recognize the effort you put in. Reward yourself with something you enjoy. 

Share your success with others – why not tell your family, friends, and colleagues what you have achieved.  Or take a few minutes to write down your successes, no matter how small, in a journal or notebook. Looking back at your accomplishments can help you stay motivated and focused on the future.
